How to Get There

Denizli is the main transportation hub for visiting Pamukkale.

  • From Istanbul:
You can reach Pamukkale by domestic flight or long-distance bus. Flights to Denizli Çardak Airport (DNZ) take about 1 hour, while buses take around 10 hours.
  • From Denizli Çardak Airport (DNZ):
Shuttle buses are available to both Pamukkale village and Denizli Otogar (Bus Terminal). The journey takes about 1 hour. If you arrive at the Otogar, continue to Pamukkale by local dolmuş (minibus).
  • From the Denizli Otogar:
Dolmuş run regularly to Pamukkale village. The journey takes approximately 30–40 minutes.

Choosing the Right Gate

There are 3 entrances to the site. Choose the best option depending on how you want to explore the site.

Town Entrance (Main Gate for Foot Passengers)

The Town Entrance (Main Gate for Foot Passengers) is located in the heart of Pamukkale village, right by the minibus station. This entrance is ideal for independent travelers. You can walk across the white travertines barefoot while enjoying the scenery.

North Gate

The North Gate is located on the dolmuş route from Pamukkale village toward Karahayıt village. This makes the entrance ideal if you want to visit the ancient Necropolis first and then walk downhill toward the travertines.

South Gate

The South Gate is the most convenient entrance to visit both Hierapolis and the travertines with less walking. Located close to the main ruins, it allows you to access the ancient city and white terraces without climbing steep paths. However, since there is no public transportation here, taking a taxi or private transport is recommended.

Best Things to Do

Here are the absolute best highlights you cannot miss at Hierapolis-Pamukkale, from glowing sunset terraces to legendary ancient ruins.

Walk Across the Travertines

Enjoy the famous white terraces and thermal pools. Shoes and even flip-flops are strictly forbidden on the white travertines.

Antique Pool (Cleopatra’s Pool)

Immerse yourself in 36°C thermal waters surrounded by sunken Roman columns. Famously known as Cleopatra’s Pool, this is your chance to swim through living history—just be sure to pack your swimsuit and towel!

Hierapolis Theater

Step back in time at one of Turkey’s best-preserved Roman theaters, where a staggering 10,000 spectators once gathered to watch ancient spectacles.

Archaeological Museum

Housed inside a magnificent former Roman bath, this museum brings ancient history to life with an impressive collection of stunning statues, intricate sarcophagi, and fascinating artifacts.

Sunset View

The white terraces create beautiful colors at sunset, making it one of the best times for photography.

Practical Tips & Things to Know Before You Visit

Be Careful at the Ticket Office

Be careful when buying your entrance ticket. Some visitors have reported being pressured to purchase wireless earphones or audio guide services at the ticket office.

These extras are not required to enter the site. Always check your receipt carefully before completing payment and make sure you are only charged for the entrance ticket you intended to buy.

Luggage

There are no lockers inside the Hierapolis site. Leave large bags at Denizli Otogar storage or your hotel before visiting.

What to Bring

Bring a swimsuit if you plan to swim in Cleopatra’s Pool, as well as a towel, hat, sunglasses, and a plastic bag to carry your shoes while walking across the travertines.

Bring a bottle of water with you. Prices for drinks inside the site can be higher, so it is better to buy water before entering.

Cash

Although cards are widely accepted, carrying some Turkish Lira is useful for minibuses, public toilets, and small purchases.

Best Time to Visit

Best Months

May, June, September, and October usually offer the most pleasant weather conditions.

Summer (July–August)

Temperatures can exceed 40°C. Visit early in the morning or around sunset to avoid the strongest heat.

Winter (December–February)

It can be freezing cold. Walking barefoot on the travertines may be uncomfortable because of the cold water.

During winter, entering from the South Gate or North Gate is recommended, as these entrances allow you to avoid walking barefoot across the travertines for a longer distance.

Final Thoughts

Pamukkale is more than just the famous white travertines. The ancient city of Hierapolis, thermal waters, and surrounding areas make it a destination worth exploring.

Choosing the right timing, entrance gate, and preparation can greatly improve your experience.
